Practice Dresses ![]()
Retro print skating dress.
This dress is reminiscent of the more modest styles worn in the 1970s. Note the long sleeves, simple neckline and closed back. A quadruple circle skirt flutters with every movement.
70s skaters also wore costumes like this (perhaps with a little glitter) for competition. The bare sexy look had not come to the ice yet.Basic cotton-spandex dress.
This is a good basic practice dress with a circular skirt. A few sequins could be added to make it appropriate for adult competition.
The World's Ugliest Skating Dress
Peach crushed velvet skating dress.
Why is this dress so ugly?
The fabric is too shiny.
The limp fabric does not hold the shape of the sleeves or skirt.
The quadruple cicle skirt is too full.
I made this dress in 1999 when I was at least 20 pounds heavier. It was my first experiment with crushed stretch velvet. Since then I have learned to examine the nap of the fabric and cut it to minimize shine. This fabric forms a terribly unflattering high-contrast reflective band around my bustline.
I had a photograph of myself wearing this dress and had to throw the picture away. I do not care to remember looking like a shiny peach buffalo.

I bought at least five yards of this stretch velvet for about 75% off. What a deal! I was even happier when this top did not fit, and I had to take in the side seams and shoulders. I have lost about 30 pounds since I last constructed a garment from this pattern. |
Notice the new stitching about one inch from the original. Over both side seams, I had to take this top in almost four inches. I also took in the shoulders and sleeves. |

This basic black cotton-spandex leotard is dressed up with a tie-font overblouse. The blouse is made of a lacy knit accented with gold metallic threads. |
This top is draped across the front and caught with a flared ruffle. The stretch fabric has a matte finish. |
Purple and candy pink skating outfit.
This pretty costume consists of a purple and candy pink tie dyed velvet leotard and a four-layer wrap skirt. The skirt alternates layers of coordinating pink and purple chiffon. It makes a dramatic color presentation, especially as the skirt flips and flutters with skating movement.

I love these crushed velvet jazz pants and have received many compliments on them. I have made at least six pairs in different colors and textures. Read about skating in jazz pants in the journal. |
These yellow jazz pants are made from the same pattern as the pink velvet ones. They are presented with a matching yellow chiffon wrap skirt. |

I made this cotton-spandex tunic for outdoor roller skating. The princess seams are very flattering while the bare shoulders allow me to soak up the sun while skating outside in the summertime. I usually wear the tunic with leggings or legging shorts. Read about my outdoor roller skating adventures in the journal. |
Since I have decided to learn ice dance, I will need a few dance skirts. This one is very long in the back and drifts along gracefully as I skate. I made it from a remnant of fabric that cost about one dollar. Read about my first ice dance lesson in the journal. |
