Skating in the New Year, 2003

skating with a cold
Here I am out on the ice (looking miserable) before my cold was completely gone.
My legs ached and my lung capacity was greatly diminished.
I am bundled in fleece leggings and sweatshirt with a polypropylene undershirt.
A wispy chiffon skirt adds a touch of femininity to the otherwise polar ensemble.

I hope to develop this spin into a backward layback, but the back attitude is so difficult already,
this is definitely a long term project.

Sit Spins Galore

catch foot sit spin
The sit spin above is a unique varition in which I achieve a deep sit then catch my free leg
and pull it around so it curves under my body.
Holding the position for several revolutions exaggerates the effect.
This sit spin is performed with the skating thigh parallel to the ice. It is useful for change-sit combinations. The free leg should be straighter.

I am working on a variation with the free foot poised atop the skating knee. With my cold, I did not have the energy to descend to a seated position.

Four Views of a Layback

looking at the tracing Looking over my shoulder at a very precise tracing.
The layback has been one of my favorite moves since I learned it quite by accident during my second year as an adult skater. Following a recent coaching change, I discovered an aesthetic flaw in my layback. I enter it with a raised right shoulder which remains tilted upward throughout the spin. Ideally, the shoulders should be level and parallel to the ice. While I have been working on correcting this imperfection, changing a long-term habit will take considerable time and effort. However, I have noticed many elite skaters with lopsided laybacks, so I am in good company. As a set of disjointed still photos, this layback position looks considerably worse than in a video recording. The curvature of my body creates a pleasing line while rotating.
