Unique and Interesting Skating Elements

Welcome to my treasure trove of unique and interesting skating elements! Here you will find links to videos of skills performed by elite skaters both current and historic as well as competitive and recreational skaters doing moves you don't see every day. Enjoy!

Butterflies, Arabian Cartwheels and Stars

1. The butterfly jump may be performed as a single element, series of jumps or entrance to a spin.
Butterfly spin entrance
2. Martial artists also perform butterfly kicks
This tutorial demonstrates an incredible high version.
3. Martial artists also perform a version with a horizontal rotation called a "butterfly twist".
This tutorial provides an excellent example.
4. A version of the butterfly twist has been performed on quad roller skates.
The element can be seen at 1:08 in this video.
5. Stars are basically exaggerated toe-assisted forward outside three-turns.
Multiple star turns into a butterfly.
6. Arabian or (aerial) cartwheels are performed in gymnastics.
A gymnast's complete tutorial.
7. The late Robert Wagenhoffer owned the ultimate aerial cartwheel on ice.
His entire program is worth watching. The cartwheel is featured at ~2:45.

Inside Axels

Inside axels take off from an inside edge and complete 1.5 or 2.5 rotations in the air.
1. Julie Lynn Holmes performing a double inside axel at ~3:39.
2. A double inside axel on quad roller skates.

One-Foot Axels

One-foot axels take off from a forward outside edge like a basic axel, but land on the inside edge of the same foot.
1. Janet Lynn performing a one-foot axel can be seen in this video at ~1:43.
2. Jill Trenary's one-foot axel triple salchow combination at ~1:19.

Mirror Axels

Mirror axels are a series of axels performed in opposite directions.
1. In this video Carole Heiss performs a series of four axels, alternating rotational directions at ~2:10.
2. Rohene Ward performs mirrored double axels in this video at ~2:05.
Inside Edge Jump Landings
Usually jumps are landed on a backward outsde edge. However, the half-loop a common connecting jump lands on an inside edge facilitating a take-off into a salchow or flip. Theoretically, any jump can be landed on the inside edge of the opposite foot.
1. In this video Brian Pockar attempts a one-foot triple salchow (inside edge landing) into a double flip. ~0.30
Splits on Ice
1. Vanessa Gusmeroli's split on ice at ~3:23.
2. A split finale from Nicole Bobek at ~3:40
Split Jumps
1. Tenley Albright's split toe loop and backward split jump in this video clip.
2. Extreme Russian split jumps by Rory Flack Burghart at ~2:33.

Layover and Inverted Camel Spins

Hydroblading

2. Mr. Frick's classic cantilever

This page is a work in progress. I am constantly looking for the cool and unusual performed on skates. If you have a link to something interesting that you would like to see included here, please send me an email message with a brief discription of the skill and the URL.
